From Transactional Spatial Databases Integrity Constraints to Spatial Datacubes Integrity Constraints

چکیده
Spatial multidimensional databases (also called "spatial datacubes") are the cornerstone of the emerging Spatial On-Line Analytical Processing technology (SOLAP). They are aimed at supporting Geographic Knowledge Discovery (GKD) as well as certain types of spatial decision-making. Although these technologies seem promising at first glance, they may provide unreliable results if one does not consider the quality of spatio-temporal data. In traditional spatial databases, spatial integrity constraints have been employed to improve internal quality of spatial data. However, spatial datacubes require additional integrity constraints in comparison to the traditional databases found into transactional GIS systems. These extra constraints concern the supplementary information included in these datacubes, such as spatial dimensions and hierarchies, aggregated data, multidimensional cross-tabulation of data, and the existence of a temporal dimension with several levels of granularity. This paper presents the characteristics of spatial datacubes that differentiate them from transactional spatial databases from a spatial integrity constraint perspective. Based on these characteristics, we propose fundamental considerations for the classification of these integrity constraints and for the use of integrity constraint specification languages tailored for geospatial datacubes. Finally, the paper concludes and addresses some questions that contribute to a research agenda for the definition of spatial integrity constraints in spatial datacubes. * Corresponding author.

متن کاملDeriving Spatial Integrity Constraints from Geographic Application Schemas
Integrity constraints of various kinds must be observed when creating or updating a database in order to preserve the semantics and the quality of stored data (Elmasri & Navathe, 2000). Within the scope of geographic applications, integrity assurance requires special attention from the designer, since most geographic applications use data that depend on spatial relationships (Egenhofer & Franzo...
متن کاملFormal classification of integrity constraints in spatiotemporal database applications
Imposing integrity constraints is an efficient way to improve data quality in databases. Effective imposition of integrity constraints requires their precise distinction and specification. Despite a few efforts for enhancing the distinction and specification of the integrity constraints in spatial and spatiotemporal databases by their classifications, these classifications fail to precisely dis...
متن کاملThe Use of a Metadata Repository in Spatial Database Development
Database schemas currently used to define spatial databases are deficient in that they do not incorporate facilities to specify business rules/integrity constraints. This shortcoming has been noted by Gnther and Lamberts [Gnther & Lamberts, 1994] who commented that geographical information systems (GIS) do not generally offer any functionality to preserve semantic integrity. It is desirable t...
متن کاملSemantic Integrity Constraints for Spatial Databases
This paper introduces a formalization of a set of spatial semantic integrity constraints on an extended-relational database model. The formalization extends traditional notions of functional and inclusion dependencies by adding interaction with spatial attributes. This enables to specify implicit and explicit topological conditions between geometries and impose constraints on thematic attribute...
